Goal:
Civil Society Organizations are better enabled to play a key role to improved livelihoods of dryland communities through capacity building, knowledge sharing and advocacy.
Objectives:
- Articulate local concerns in national and international policy processes (“advocacy”). The goal is to become a consolidated and reliable “speaking partner” for different stakeholders and decision makers and furthermore to ascertain that participatory processes are supported and guaranteed by qualified and consorted input.
- Continue strengthening national platforms for coordination and collaboration regarding sustainable development in drylands (“capacity building”).
- Act as a knowledge hub for local knowledge and research (“knowledge sharing”). This knowledge hub will strive to connect the knowledge, experience and expertise of practitioners, scientific and political actors.
Brief description:
Drynet II – a “Springboard” to promote resilience in drylands has officially launched the second phase in January 2011 under the financial assistance of the SWC (Swiss Development Cooperation) and PSO.
During the first phase of Drynet project (2007-2009), the project managed to conduct the basic assessment on the involvement of the CSOs in the UNCCD, compile a database on the Central Asian NGOs and donors engaged in this area. Also the project had achieved strengthening in partnership, exchange and sharing of information and best practices through publishing of regular newsletters and conduction of media events. The project paid efforts to strengthen the capacity of public organizations in drawing up of project ideas and proposals on the issues of combat desertification.
The second phase of the “Drynet” program has provided again a unique opportunity for 14 international civil society organizations to jointly promote the interests of communities and ecosystems in the drylands. By involving civil society groups in local and national development and planning processes, Drynet has successfully built a foundation for civil society across the world to strengthen its position in the struggle to sustainably manage drylands.
Annually the project plans to publish three newsletters and to conduct regional seminars on priority topics in the field land degradation and desertification.
