Cross-border Monitoring and Early Warning Systems of Geohazards
Kazakhstan, Almaty, 17 October 2012 – The First meeting of the intersectoral working group in the framework if GIZ project «Сross-border Monitoring and Early Warning Systems of Geohazards» was held in The Regional Center of Hydrology for Central Asia (RCH) in Kazhydromet building. The new stage of the project started on 1 October 2012 and was initiated by GIZ in collaboration and with the support of RCH and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).
The meeting was organized by GIZ with the support of RCH, Kazhydromet and CAREC.
The following parley was attended by leading experts in the sphere of water resources, the study of mountains and glaciers, climate change and adaptation to climate change and geohazards – representatives of Kazhydromet, Institute of Geography, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (Faculty of Geography and Natural Resources), Water Committee of Republic of Kazakhstan, International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), GIZ, RCH, CAREC and others
Participants discussed the existing problems in the sphere of water resources and the most important geohazards in Kazakhstan as well as in the whole region. This caused a birth of prior issue “Early warning and alert on climate risks to water resources in the basin of Syr Darya river”
In addition, participants noted the importance of automation and modernization of equipment used for the prevention of climate risks and also the development of closer cooperation and usage of space and ground-based monitoring systems for better data collecting.
As a step further, the project will conduct the Second meeting of the national working group on geohazards on 16 November, 2012, that will be targeted on discussions and proposition of the work plan and the distribution of roles and responsibilities in the project at the national level.
It is assumed that during the period from October 2012 to June 2013 these meetings will be held in all CA countries and their follow-up will define a common priority geohazard for all CA countries. Later, this will make possible for GIZ to support region in adaptation of geohazard under the chosen issue.
